This past weekend was filled with immense joy and bustling activity as we celebrated a significant milestone: the ninth birthday of our wonderful twins, Hayden and Josie! It feels like just yesterday they arrived, tiny bundles of wonder, and now they’re vibrant, imaginative nine-year-olds with distinct personalities and endless energy. Watching them grow has been the greatest adventure, and each birthday marks another cherished chapter in our family’s beautiful story. As a mom, there’s nothing quite like witnessing your children reach new milestones, and turning nine feels particularly momentous, a blend of childhood wonder and budding independence.
When they were first born, I vividly remember telling myself I would never refer to them simply as “the twins.” I wanted them to be recognized as individuals, not just a collective unit. For a very long time, we affectionately called them “the babies.” Even now, they will always be MY babies, deep in my heart. However, once they started elementary school, I began receiving some rather curious glances when I used that term. While I certainly call them by their names, Hayden and Josie, and we do so constantly, there are moments in conversation when “lumping them together” becomes almost inevitable. In those instances, it’s truly challenging not to just say “the twins.” It’s a natural shorthand that has become a part of our daily vocabulary, making it easier to navigate conversations about them without constantly listing two names.
Our son, Hayden, whom we affectionately called “Baby A” during my pregnancy, was born exactly one minute before his sister, Josie. He takes great pride in this fact, often playfully reminding her that he’s the elder. This minute-long seniority is a recurring playful jab between them, a small detail that adds to their unique sibling dynamic. Yet, I have a strong feeling Josie secretly enjoys being considered “the baby” of the two. It seems to work out perfectly for both of them, embodying their unique relationship right from the very start. Their differing personalities and playful rivalry have always been a source of amusement and love in our home.
Our Incredible Journey: A Twin Birth Story Filled with Gratitude
We were incredibly blessed that our twins arrived healthy and weighed a good amount, especially considering their early arrival. The journey to their birth was not without its challenges. I spent three anxious days in the hospital prior to their birth, battling toxemia, a serious pregnancy complication. The doctors were meticulously monitoring us, patiently waiting until they reached 34 weeks gestation, a crucial milestone for preterm babies. Each day that passed was filled with hope and a silent prayer for their healthy development.
The day they reached that point was particularly memorable and somewhat dramatic. I was weighed at 8 AM, and then again at noon, only to discover I had gained a staggering four pounds in just four hours! I was so swollen with water, my body retaining fluids at an alarming rate, that my feet had ballooned to resemble something out of a cartoon, truly earning the description of “Fred Flintstone’s feet.” The visual was almost comical, despite the underlying medical concern.
At that critical juncture, my doctor made the decisive call: we couldn’t wait any longer. The medical team determined it was time for them to make their grand entrance. We had already anticipated a C-section because Baby A, Hayden, was in a breech position. Having never undergone a C-section before, I admit I was quite scared. The fear of the unknown, combined with the urgency of the situation, made for an emotional roller coaster. The planned procedure quickly transitioned into an emergency C-section, adding an extra layer of urgency and anxiety to an already tense situation.
There was no more time for mental preparation; it was simply a case of “Ready or not… here they come!” And just like that, Hayden and Josie were born, weighing a healthy 6.4 pounds and 6.5 pounds respectively. The sound of their first cries was music to my ears, and the relief and joy that flooded the operating room were overwhelming. The most wonderful news, a true answer to prayers, was that they were both strong enough to bypass the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and went straight to the regular nursery. Oh, the immense gratitude and profound thanksgiving we felt in that moment! It was a testament to their strength and the incredible care we received. Praise God, indeed.
Here they are…my BABIES!! Oh, how I wish I could just pick them up and kiss those chubby baby cheeks again! The memories of their tiny faces are still so vivid.
Growing Up: The Unique Dynamic of Twins and Evolving Identities
For the first two years of their lives, Hayden and Josie maintained an almost identical weight, always within a couple of ounces of each other. It was fascinating to see how closely their development tracked. Then, Josie had a growth spurt that seemed to continue unabated! Now, she consistently outweighs her brother by more than ten pounds. While I know that someday the gap might close or even reverse, it undeniably bothers Hayden, especially when he has to weigh in for various sports activities! His competitive spirit emerges, and he sometimes feels the need to assert his “older brother” status in other ways.
As they’ve grown, their physical differences have become more pronounced, and their individual personalities shine even brighter. Anymore, people often question whether they are actually twins or just siblings born very close in age. They don’t have that “identical twin” look, and their differing sizes sometimes confuse people who expect twins to be mirror images. So, I suppose calling them “the twins” really does clarify their unique bond and shared birth story, making it easier to explain their relationship to curious onlookers. It’s a little ironic how I resisted the term initially, only to embrace it as a practical, and often endearing, descriptor now. It’s a journey of understanding and celebrating their individuality within their shared twin identity.
A Creative Celebration: The Art Party at CREATE Studio
For their ninth birthday celebration, Hayden and Josie decided they wanted to do something artistic and invited a few friends to a fantastic local business called CREATE. This place is an absolute gem in our community, offering all sorts of art projects and creative outlets for people of all ages. From painting to pottery, they provide a space for imagination to flourish. My kiddos absolutely adore attending their camps during the summer and on school breaks, so it was a natural choice for their birthday bash. They knew it would be a fun and engaging time for them and their friends to unleash their inner artists and create lasting memories.
The main activity for the party was painting canvases for their rooms. The children were given an array of vibrant paints, fun stamps, and intricate stencils, allowing them complete freedom to design their own unique masterpieces. The studio was perfectly set up, with easels and palettes ready for action. Kiersten, who was guiding the kids, did such an awesome job encouraging their creativity, offering gentle guidance, and helping them bring their visions to life. The studio was abuzz with excited chatter, the gentle scraping of brushes against canvas, and the delightful energy of young artists at work. It was wonderful to see each child’s personality emerge through their chosen colors and designs.

After their exhilarating and creative painting session, the children gathered to open gifts, filled with excitement and anticipation for what treasures lay inside the colorful wrapping paper. Then came the moment everyone was waiting for: enjoying the incredibly vibrant and delicious tie-dye cupcakes that the twins, our other son, and I had made together earlier. The joy on their faces as they dug into these colorful treats was absolutely priceless, a perfect end to a fun-filled art party!
How cool are these tie-dye cupcakes?! The vibrant colors were a huge hit!
To enhance the artistic theme, I took a playful approach to presenting the cupcakes. I arranged them artfully on a painting palette, using the colorful frosting to mimic dollops of paint. They looked absolutely adorable and perfectly matched the creative vibe of the party! It was a small detail that brought a big smile to everyone’s faces and reinforced the art theme beautifully.

Birthday Weekend Traditions: Beloved Meals and Delightful Desserts
The art party, a riot of colors and creativity, took place on Saturday. However, Sunday was their actual birthday, a day we always dedicate to cherished family traditions. Keeping with one of our most beloved customs, Hayden and Josie each got to choose what they wanted Mom to make for dinner. With twins, this tradition can sometimes lead to very interesting negotiations and, occasionally, comical culinary requests! This year, since their birthday fell on a weekend, they cleverly conspired to secure two special meals out of the deal—one for breakfast and one for dinner! They certainly know how to maximize their birthday privileges and make the most of their special day.
For a delightful birthday breakfast, Hayden’s choice was unanimous: “Dad’s omelets.” My husband truly makes the best omelets – fluffy, perfectly cooked, and generously filled with all the kids’ favorite ingredients, from cheese to various veggies. It’s a special, savory treat they always look forward to, making their birthday morning feel extra special. The simple act of dad cooking a personalized breakfast adds so much warmth to the day.

For their birthday dinner, Josie made a fantastic choice: Shrimp and Crab Pasta. This dish is an absolute family favorite, a guaranteed crowd-pleaser that everyone eagerly anticipates whenever it’s on the menu! Its rich flavors and comforting warmth make it perfect for a celebratory meal. I’ve had the pleasure of sharing this beloved recipe before, and you can easily find it HERE if you’d like to try it for your family. Serving it on the special “birthday plate” only added to the festive atmosphere, making each bite feel extra celebratory.

After the savory delights, it was time for the much-anticipated birthday dessert! (Or, in Josie’s case, pie… because some traditions are worth breaking for pie!)
Josie, much like her mom, is a true pie enthusiast! Without hesitation, she requested a classic Village Inn French Silk Pie. Its smooth, rich chocolate filling and delicate crust are irresistible to her. Hayden, on the other hand, had his heart set on an Ice Cream Sandwich Cake. This particular cake has become a staple in our household; I’ve made it countless times over the years, and each rendition always turns out wonderfully unique, allowing for endless creativity and variations depending on the flavors and toppings chosen. It’s always a winner!

Homemade Delights: Vibrant Tie-Dye Cupcakes & Versatile Ice Cream Sandwich Cake
I had never attempted to make tie-dye cupcakes before, though I’d admired many beautiful creations posted online and always yearned to try my hand at them. The idea of swirling vibrant colors into cake batter held a certain artistic appeal. When brainstorming fun, art-themed treats for the twins’ birthday party at CREATE, I realized this was the perfect opportunity to finally give them a go! The process was surprisingly simple and incredibly rewarding, yielding a batch of truly psychedelic and delicious cupcakes that perfectly fit our creative celebration.
Tie-Dye Cupcakes: A Simple & Fun Recipe for a Pop of Color
There isn’t really a complicated “recipe” for these visually stunning cupcakes, but I’d love to share my simple method so you can create your own vibrant treats! It’s an activity that can even involve the kids, adding to the fun.
What You’ll Need:
- One box of white cake mix (and ingredients as per box instructions)
- Liquid or gel food coloring (I used red, blue, yellow, and green, but any combination works!)
- Cupcake liners
- Toothpicks or a thin skewer
- Your favorite buttercream frosting recipe
- Almond extract (optional, for flavoring frosting, or any other flavor you prefer)
Instructions:
- First, prepare your white cake mix according to the package instructions. Ensure the batter is smooth and free of lumps. White cake mix works best as it allows the colors to truly pop.
- Next, divide the prepared cake batter evenly into four separate bowls (or as many bowls as you have colors planned). Precision isn’t crucial here, just try to get roughly equal amounts.
- Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl, stirring gently until you achieve your desired vibrant shades. Remember, a little food coloring goes a long way, especially with gel colors! I opted for a classic tie-dye palette of red, blue, yellow, and green, but feel free to experiment with your favorites.
- Line your cupcake pan with cupcake liners. Then, using a spoon, dollop random amounts of each colored batter into the liners. Don’t be too neat; the randomness and layering of colors are precisely what create the beautiful tie-dye effect.
- Once all colors are in each liner, take a toothpick or a small skewer and gently swirl the batters together just once or twice. You’re aiming for a marbled, tie-dye effect, not fully blended colors. Over-mixing will cause the colors to muddy.
- Bake the cupcakes according to the cake mix instructions. Keep an eye on them, as baking times can vary slightly. When they emerge from the oven, you’ll be greeted with these incredible, psychedelic beauties that will surely impress!
Oh, the psychedelic joy of these freshly baked beauties!
For the frosting, I used my favorite buttercream recipe and flavored it with almond extract, a flavor my kids absolutely adore. To truly match the cupcakes’ artistic theme, I divided the frosting into several portions and colored each portion to complement the vibrant hues within the cupcakes themselves. I then frosted them smoothly with a knife, ensuring they looked like inviting dollops of paint on a palette. This presentation perfectly completed the art studio vibe of the party. Ta-Da! They were not just a treat for the taste buds but a visual delight, a true culinary art piece!

Versatile & Delicious: The Crowd-Pleasing Ice Cream Sandwich Cake
The Ice Cream Sandwich Cake recipe I use is originally from Kraft, and it’s a total winner in our family. I first made it a couple of years ago for Easter, and the kids devoured it in record time, which is always a good sign! What I love most about this recipe is how incredibly versatile it is; whenever I make it, it always turns out a little different, depending on the ice cream sandwiches and toppings I choose to incorporate. This time, I decided to make it with Neapolitan ice cream sandwiches, adding a fun trio of chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry flavors. For this particular size, I stuck to the basic recipe, which yields a perfect family-sized dessert. I topped it with a generous drizzle of warm hot fudge, and Hayden eagerly added some colorful jimmies (sprinkles) for extra flair. To finish it off, I sprinkled extra cookie crumbs around the base for added texture and visual appeal, making it look as good as it tastes.
Last year, for my oldest son’s birthday, I really went all out and tripled the recipe to make a truly enormous cake for him and his friends. It was a spectacular sight, towering with layers of ice cream sandwiches and delicious toppings, and, to no one’s surprise, it disappeared just as quickly as the smaller versions! This cake is incredibly adaptable, whether you’re serving a small family or a large gathering, and its simplicity makes it a fantastic, stress-free choice for any celebration. It’s the kind of dessert that looks impressive but takes minimal effort, a win-win for any busy parent.

I highly recommend trying this fun and easy dessert. You can find the original recipe exactly as Kraft presents it on their website by following the link below. But please, don’t limit yourself to just the basic version! Use your imagination and get creative with different ice cream flavors (mint chocolate chip, cookie dough, etc.), an array of toppings (caramel, whipped cream, crushed candy, fresh fruit), and even experiment with different sizes or shapes. The options truly are endless, making this a dessert you can customize for any taste or occasion!
