Another perspective of Cocoa Krispy Owls

The process of making these delightful owls was incredibly rewarding. Each owl took on its own unique character as I experimented with different arrangements of eyes and “eyelids.” Some looked surprised, others mischievous, and a few downright sleepy! It’s a wonderful way to express creativity, and you’ll find that no two owls will ever look exactly alike, which adds to their charm.

Essential Ingredients for Your Cocoa Krispy Owls

Creating these magical marshmallow owls requires a few simple ingredients, most of which you likely already have in your pantry or can easily find at your local grocery store. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

  • Kellogg’s Cocoa Krispies Cereal
  • Oreo Cookies (the classic sandwich cookies work best)
  • M&M’s Candies (for those vibrant owl eyes!)
  • Brach’s Candy Corn (perfect for beaks and feet)
  • Our Family Mini Marshmallows (or your preferred brand)
  • Our Family Butter (unsalted is generally preferred for baking, but salted works too)
  • Our Family Chocolate Frosting (ready-made for convenience)

Having all your ingredients laid out and ready before you begin will make the assembly process smooth and enjoyable, especially when working with kids!

How to Make Your Own Adorable Cocoa Krispy Owls: Step-by-Step Guide

Making these cereal bar owls is a straightforward process, combining the classic no-bake marshmallow treat method with some creative decorating. Follow these steps to bring your Halloween owls to life!

The Cocoa Krispies Base

  1. Melting butter and marshmallows in a saucepan

In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Once the butter is mostly melted, add the mini marshmallows. Continue stirring constantly until the marshmallows are completely melted and smooth, forming a gooey, sticky mixture. Be careful not to let the mixture burn.

  2. Cocoa Krispies cereal mixed with melted marshmallow

Remove the saucepan from the heat. Pour the Kellogg’s Cocoa Krispies cereal into the marshmallow mixture. Stir vigorously with a buttered spatula or wooden spoon until the cereal is thoroughly coated. This step requires a bit of speed as the mixture will start to cool and stiffen. And yes, it will be tempting to eat it straight out of the bowl, but resist the urge!

Shaping and Chilling Your Owl Bodies

  1. Pressing Cocoa Krispies mixture into a prepared baking pan

Prepare a 10.25 x 15.25 inch cookie sheet by lining it with foil and spraying it generously with non-stick cooking spray. Evenly press the Cocoa Krispies mixture into the prepared pan. You can use a buttered spatula or a piece of wax paper to help press it down firmly and evenly without sticking. Once pressed, chill the mixture in the refrigerator for at least an hour to allow it to set completely.

  2. Cutting Cocoa Krispies treats into rectangles with ear notches

Once chilled and firm, carefully lift the foil lining out of the pan. Cut the large rectangle in half lengthwise, then cut these strips into approximately 3×5 inch rectangles. These will be the bodies of your owls. To create their distinctive ears, cut a small triangular notch out of one of the short ends of each rectangle. This gives them that classic owl silhouette.

Decorating Your Wise Little Owls

  1. Assorted candies and separated Oreo cookies for decorating

Before you begin decorating, separate your Oreo cookies. You’ll want to keep both sides: the cream-filled side will be perfect for the main part of the eyes, and the plain cookie wafers can be used to create fun eyelids or extra details. Have your M&M’s and candy corn sorted and ready. The chocolate frosting will serve as your edible “glue.”

  2. Applying candy decorations to Cocoa Krispy Owls with frosting

Generously spread a dab of chocolate frosting onto the back of each cream-filled Oreo half, then adhere them to the owl’s face for the large, round eyes. Press an M&M into the center of the Oreo frosting for the pupils. For the beak, gently press a piece of candy corn (pointy side down) just below the eyes. Use regular orange candy corn for the beaks and brown candy corn for the feet, attaching them with a small dot of frosting.

  3. A charming collection of finished Cocoa Krispy Owls

This is where the real fun begins! Experiment with different M&M colors, angles of candy corn, and even add cookie wafer eyelids to give each owl a unique personality and expression. Encourage your kids or grandkids to get involved and see what creative ideas they come up with – the more varied, the better! You might be surprised by the adorable and hilarious faces they create.

A particularly charming Cocoa Krispy Owl with a fruit roll-up bow

Look at this sweet little owl! I think she definitely has a crush on that blue-eyed boy owl over there. To add an extra touch of cuteness, I fashioned her tiny bow out of a piece of fruit roll-up. Small details like these can truly elevate your treats and make them even more special. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box with your edible adornments!

Tips for Perfect Cocoa Krispy Owls

  • Butter Your Tools: Always use a buttered spatula or your hands (lightly coated in butter or cooking spray) when pressing the mixture into the pan or cutting it. This prevents sticking and makes the process much easier.
  • Chill Thoroughly: Don’t rush the chilling process. A firm, well-chilled base is essential for clean cuts and easy handling during decoration.
  • Get Creative: Encourage imagination! Beyond Oreos and M&M’s, consider using chocolate chips, sprinkles, or even small pieces of licorice for different owl features.
  • Storage: Store your finished Cocoa Krispy Owls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days. They tend to firm up a bit over time but remain delightfully chewy.
  • Safety First: When involving kids, supervise melting and hot mixtures. Let them take the lead on the decorating steps, which are perfectly safe and incredibly fun for all ages.

As this marks my final sponsored post for 2018, I wanted to take a moment to look back at some of the other fantastic recipes we’ve created together this year.

Back in January, just in time for the Super Bowl, I unveiled this incredible BUFFALO CAULIFLOWER DIP. It was designed as a healthier, yet equally satisfying, alternative to the beloved buffalo chicken dip. For those who love the flavor but prefer to skip the extra calories or the meat, this dip offers all the zesty satisfaction without compromise.

As May approached, we celebrated Mother’s Day with these vibrant CHERRY LIMEADE BAKED DONUTS. These light, baked donuts, finished with a sweet glaze, perfectly capture the nostalgic taste of that classic, refreshing cherry limeade drink.

In August, with the hustle and bustle of back-to-school season, we needed a comforting yet simple treat. These OLD FASHIONED FROSTED SOUR CREAM SUGAR COOKIES were an ideal choice for both lunchboxes and after-school snacks. Known for their incredible softness and perfect balance of sweetness, these cookies feature sour cream in both the cookie dough and the decadent frosting.

I’ve genuinely cherished the experience of developing recipes that resonate with both my readers and the customers of Family Fare. I sincerely hope our partnership continues, allowing me to bring you even more delicious creations using their wonderful products!
