Autumn brings with it a symphony of delights that I cherish year after year. There’s nothing quite like the blend of warm sunshine with that distinctly crisp, cool breeze that only fall can provide. I adore the satisfying crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, the mesmerizing transformation of the landscape into vibrant hues of red, orange, and gold, and the comforting aromas of spice, apple, and pumpkin filling the air. It’s the season for cozy soups and hearty stews, for bundling up in comfortable jeans and soft sweatshirts, and, of course, for the undeniable thrill and excitement of FOOTBALL!
My passion for football, particularly for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, runs deep, tracing back to my roots as a born-and-bred fan. My husband, despite being born just across the river in Iowa, surprisingly shares this lifelong devotion, much to the playful dismay of his Iowa State-loving parents. Our shared enthusiasm for the Huskers has always been a cornerstone of our fall traditions, creating countless memorable moments and fostering a strong sense of camaraderie.
Now, with our oldest son attending the university as a junior, our game-day experience has gained an even more special dimension. Trips to Lincoln aren’t just about cheering on our team; they’re precious opportunities to see him and connect as a family. We’re proud season ticket holders, and our tailgates are legendary among our friends and family, always featuring a grand, delectable spread of food designed to fuel everyone for the big game. Our son, along with his buddies and fraternity brothers, eagerly joins us before kickoff, always ready to refuel and get pumped up to rally behind our beloved team.
I’ve made it a personal tradition to craft unique dishes or signature cocktails that cleverly tie into the week’s opponent or a special occasion surrounding the game. For instance, when we faced Miami, I concocted a refreshing “The Frozen Hurricane Slush” – a playful culinary nod to “freezing out Miami.” Another memorable creation was the “Go Big Red Rum Red Rum Punch” when we played on Halloween, adding a spooky and spirited twist to our celebration. These themed culinary adventures always add an extra layer of fun, creativity, and excitement to our already vibrant tailgate gatherings, making each game day truly unforgettable.
Elevating Our Tailgate Spread: A Recipe Club Adventure
This year, I’ve been dedicated to expanding the collection of tailgating recipes on my website, aiming to provide even more delicious options for game day enthusiasts. So, when the head of The Secret Recipe Club extended an invitation to participate in a Tailgate Themed Recipe Swap, I couldn’t sign up fast enough! The Secret Recipe Club is a fantastic community where bloggers are secretly assigned another blog to cook from, then all reveal their creations on the same day. For context, I typically post with my assigned group for the Secret Recipe Club on the second Monday of each month. However, the club also has a brilliant initiative: a special themed swap among all four groups during months that happen to have five Mondays. It’s a wonderful concept, providing an exciting opportunity to “meet” and cook from the blogs of members outside of my usual group, fostering a greater sense of community and culinary discovery across the entire club.
For this exciting tailgate challenge, I was paired with the delightful blog, Turnips 2 Tangerines, hosted by the incredibly talented Lynn. Lynn, born and raised in the heart of Wisconsin, shares her passion for cooking from her cozy home kitchen. She’s been happily married to her junior high school sweetheart and has embraced a lifetime of culinary creativity, exploring diverse flavors and techniques. Her adventurous spirit in the kitchen shines through in the wide array of recipes she shares, and I thoroughly enjoyed browsing her inviting site, discovering many intriguing ideas. While on my initial mission to find the perfect “tailgating” dish, I know I’ll be returning to Turnips 2 Tangerines with a fresh perspective to explore other gems. Her Crock Pot Apple Pie Oatmeal has already caught my eye for a future comforting breakfast treat, and her 24 Hour Salad is definitely next on my must-make list for its intriguing preparation!
The Ultimate Tailgate Solution: Warm & Flavorful Sliders
While Lynn offered many tempting snack mixes and dips that would have been easy choices for this challenge, I decided to take a different approach: satisfying sandwiches. For our often-chilly Nebraska tailgates, anything that can be easily reheated on a portable grill or, even better, kept perfectly warm in a slow cooker, is an absolute winner. As autumn progresses into late fall, and November rolls around with its inevitable drop in temperatures, warm, comforting food becomes an absolute necessity. There’s something uniquely satisfying about enjoying a hot meal amidst the brisk outdoor air, and it’s truly amazing what deliciousness you can manage to eat and enjoy, even while bundled up and wearing wool mittens!
I did make a few minor adjustments to Lynn’s original recipe, primarily based on the availability of certain ingredients in my local stores at the time. The results, however, were absolutely fantastic, exceeding all my expectations and creating a truly memorable dish! We even had delicious leftovers, which I wisely portioned, froze, and sent with my son back to school. He was incredibly happy to have these homemade treats to enjoy later in the week, proving their versatility and convenience extend far beyond just game day celebrations. These sliders are not only perfect for feeding a crowd but also make excellent, fuss-free meal prep for busy individuals or families.
