A refreshing Copycat Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard, topped with whipped cream and cinnamon, ready to be enjoyed.

What could be more quintessentially American than a slice of warm apple pie? Perhaps the only thing that comes close is a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. But why choose when you can have the best of both worlds in one decadent spoonful? Imagine a frosty, thick blizzard teeming with chunks of spiced apple pie. Yes, we’re talking about a homemade Apple Pie Blizzard, bringing that iconic Dairy Queen flavor right to your home!

For years, the arrival of fall has held a special allure, not just for the changing leaves and crisp air, but also for Dairy Queen’s seasonal Blizzard flavors. When a DQ location opened just a mile from my house, it became a delightful, albeit challenging, temptation. My willpower often falters when those enticing fall flavors—especially the Apple Pie and Pumpkin Pie Blizzards—call to me. My daughter and I make a tradition of getting one of each to share, because, let’s be honest, making a single decision is tough when both options are so good! While the Pumpkin Pie version is on our radar for later, today, I’m thrilled to share my final Apple Week post: a truly spectacular homemade version of the classic Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard!

After all, can you truly enjoy a magnificent apple pie dessert without a generous dollop of fresh whipped cream? You technically could, but honestly, why would you want to miss out on that cloud-like perfection?

Key Ingredients for Your Homemade Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard:

Crafting this delicious blizzard requires a simple yet impactful selection of ingredients that combine to create that authentic DQ taste. Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need:

  • Creamy vanilla ice cream and rich heavy whipping cream for that irresistible base.
  • A crisp Granny Smith apple, chosen for its perfect balance of tartness and texture that stands up beautifully to baking.
  • Convenient refrigerated pie crust, which transforms into delightful crunchy bits.
  • Aromatic spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, and apple pie spice to infuse warmth.
  • Sweeteners like granulated sugar and brown sugar, plus a touch of vanilla extract to enhance all the flavors.

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Apple Pie Blizzard

Peeled and cored Granny Smith apple, ready for baking, a key component for the Copycat Apple Pie Blizzard.

Begin your blizzard adventure by preparing your apple. I always opt for a Granny Smith apple because its tartness provides the perfect counterpoint to the sweet ice cream, just like in a classic apple pie. First, carefully core and peel the apple.

Cored and peeled Granny Smith apple in a bowl with brown sugar, ready for microwaving to tender perfection.

Next, place the prepared apple in a microwave-safe bowl. Fill the core with rich brown sugar, ensuring every bite will be infused with caramel-like sweetness.

Apple seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg in a bowl, covered tightly with plastic wrap for microwave cooking.

Generously sprinkle the apple with warm cinnamon and fragrant nutmeg. Then, cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and microwave it to ‘bake’ the apple until tender. This method speeds up the process significantly while keeping the apple moist and flavorful.

Refrigerated pie crust sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar on a pizza pan, ready for baking to a crisp.

While your apple is cooking, turn your attention to the delicious pie crust. Lay a refrigerated pie crust onto a pizza pan and sprinkle it liberally with a mix of cinnamon and granulated sugar. Bake it until it’s golden brown and delightfully crispy. This cinnamon-sugar crust will add the perfect textural contrast and classic pie flavor to your blizzard.

Pureed baked apple, made using an immersion blender, cooling in a bowl for the Copycat Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard.

Once the microwaved apple has cooled slightly, it’s time to puree it. I used the mincer attachment on my Swiss Diamond Jêt Mix Immersion Blender to achieve a smooth, flavorful apple puree. After pureeing, place the apple mixture in the fridge to ensure it’s thoroughly chilled before adding it to the ice cream.

Fresh heavy whipping cream being whipped to stiff peaks with an immersion blender's beater attachment.

Next, use the beater attachment of your immersion blender to whip the heavy cream. As mentioned, this happens in seconds – it’s truly impressive! Once stiff peaks form, transfer the whipped cream to the refrigerator to keep it perfectly chilled until you’re ready to serve.

Hard vanilla ice cream in a stainless steel bowl, being blended with an immersion blender for a smooth blizzard base.

Now for the blizzard base: take your hard-frozen vanilla ice cream directly from the freezer and place it into a sturdy stainless steel bowl. Using the beater attachment again, blend the ice cream until it’s thick and smooth, but be careful not to over-blend, as you want to maintain that classic blizzard consistency—not too runny! There’s no need to add any milk; just the ice cream itself will suffice.

Thick, blended vanilla ice cream with chilled apple puree added, ready for the final mix to create the Apple Pie Blizzard.

Observe how wonderfully thick and creamy your ice cream has become. At this stage, swiftly incorporate the chilled, pureed apple into the ice cream, mixing quickly to combine without melting the ice cream too much.

Broken pieces of cinnamon pie crust folded into the apple blizzard mix, completing the homemade Dairy Queen dessert.

Finally, break apart the baked cinnamon-sugar pie crust into bite-sized pieces and gently fold them into your apple blizzard mix. The crunchy pie crust is what truly ties this copycat recipe together, giving it that authentic texture. Serve your homemade Apple Pie Blizzard immediately, topped with a generous swirl of freshly whipped cream and a dusting of extra cinnamon or apple pie spice for that extra touch of warmth.

Ingredients

For the Spiced Apple Puree:

  • 1 medium Granny Smith Apple cored, peeled, and ready for tender perfection.
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar for deep, caramel-like sweetness.
  • Sprinkling of cinnamon and nutmeg to add warm, aromatic notes.

For the Crispy Pie Crust:

  • 1 refrigerated pie crust for easy preparation and a flaky texture.
  • sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar to create a flavorful, caramelized crunch.

For the Fresh Whipped Cream:

  • 1/2 cup cold heavy whipping cream ensures quick and stable peaks.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for a delicate, sweet aroma.
  • 1 teaspoon powdered sugar adds sweetness and helps stabilize the cream.

For the Blizzard Base:

  • 3 heaping cups vanilla ice cream firmly frozen for the perfect thick consistency.

Instructions

  • For the Spiced Apple Puree: First, peel and core the Granny Smith apple, then place it into a microwave-safe bowl. Fill the apple’s core with brown sugar and generously sprinkle the outside with cinnamon and nutmeg. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap and microwave for approximately 5 minutes until the apple is tender. Exercise caution as the bowl will be very hot. Carefully remove the plastic wrap and allow the apple to cool slightly before pureeing. Once pureed to your desired consistency (using an immersion blender is ideal), place it in the refrigerator to chill completely.
  • For the Crispy Pie Crust: Unroll a refrigerated pie crust onto a pizza pan or baking sheet. Sprinkle it evenly with granulated sugar and cinnamon. Bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees F (190 degrees C) for about 9 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Once baked, allow it to cool completely. You’ll use about 1/4 of the crust for the blizzard itself; the remaining pieces are perfect for garnishing or a delicious snack!
  • For the Fresh Whipped Cream: In a cold bowl, combine the cold heavy whipping cream with vanilla extract and powdered sugar. Whip using a hand mixer or an immersion blender with the beater attachment until stiff peaks form. Place the whipped cream back into the refrigerator to keep it perfectly chilled until you’re ready to serve your blizzards.
  • For the Blizzard Assembly: Begin with very cold, hard-frozen vanilla ice cream. Scoop the ice cream into a sturdy stainless steel bowl. Using an immersion blender with the beater attachment, or a stand mixer, blend the ice cream until it’s just smooth and thick. Avoid over-blending, as this can make the ice cream too runny. Quickly add the chilled, pureed spiced apples and gently fold them into the ice cream. Break the baked pie crust into small, bite-sized pieces and fold those into the apple-ice cream mixture. Serve your Copycat Dairy Queen Apple Pie Blizzard immediately, topped with a generous dollop of your homemade whipped cream and a sprinkle of apple pie spice for the ultimate finish.
