Embracing the Spirit of the Big Game and Oktoberfest
Every season, there’s that one football game that stands out, the one circled on everyone’s calendar. For us, that monumental game arrived last Saturday, bringing with it an electric atmosphere and an unforgettable experience. We hadn’t faced the Oregon Ducks in quite some time, and their visit to town ignited a fervor that was truly contagious. Boy, was THAT a fun game! The energy, the camaraderie, the anticipation – it was everything you could hope for from a major sporting event.

Before the game, we hosted an epic tailgate party, a tradition that brings friends and family together for food, fun, and spirited cheering. What made this particular tailgate even more special was its timing: it coincided perfectly with the first day of Oktoberfest! Naturally, we seized the opportunity to infuse our party with a festive German theme, blending the excitement of football with the joyous spirit of a traditional Bavarian celebration.

The Birth of a Brilliant Idea: Why Not a Brat Burger?
Of course, we could have simply grilled up some classic bratwursts. Everyone would have been perfectly happy and content – who doesn’t love a good brat? But sometimes, a creative spark ignites, urging you to try something new, something *different*. One morning, lying in bed and mentally planning the menu for our big Oktoberfest-themed tailgate, a thought struck me: what if we could combine the beloved concept of a juicy burger with the distinctive, savory flavor of a bratwurst? Could we create something truly unique, something utterly fabulous that would surprise and delight our guests?

And just like that, the ingenious Brat Burger was born! The idea was simple yet revolutionary: take the best elements of both iconic dishes and merge them into one incredible bite. This wasn’t just about putting a brat on a bun; it was about transforming the patty itself. The goal was to deliver a familiar burger texture but with an explosion of authentic bratwurst flavor, seasoned perfectly to evoke the tastes of Bavaria. The excitement of this culinary experiment was palpable, and I couldn’t wait to see the reactions of our guests.
Crafting the Perfect Brat Burger Patty
To bring this vision to life, I meticulously combined equal parts lean ground beef and fresh bratwurst meat, ensuring the casings were removed from the bratwurst to achieve a consistent, tender texture throughout the patty. This foundational blend provides both the richness of beef and the distinctive, slightly coarse texture and seasoning typically found in bratwurst. The magic truly happened when I incorporated a thoughtful selection of German spices, including a generous half-teaspoon of marjoram and a quarter-teaspoon of white pepper, complemented by half a teaspoon of salt. These spices are crucial, as they impart that authentic, aromatic flavor profile reminiscent of traditional German sausages. To bind everything together and ensure juicy, tender burgers, I added a third of a cup of plain breadcrumbs. The mixture was then thoroughly combined by hand, allowing all the flavors to meld beautifully. Once mixed, we carefully hand-pattied them into perfect, grill-ready shapes – not too thick, not too thin – ensuring even cooking.
Grilling these patties was a joy, filling the air with an irresistible aroma that drew everyone closer to the barbecue. As they sizzled to perfection, each burger developed a beautifully seared exterior while remaining wonderfully moist and flavorful on the inside. The anticipation grew with every flip. The first bites were met with universal approval and often a moment of delightful confusion. The most common comment heard repeatedly was: “Wait. I thought this was a burger? But it *tastes* like a brat?!” This reaction was precisely what I was aiming for – a surprising, delicious fusion that challenged expectations in the best way possible. Other comments included enthusiastic exclamations like “Wow!” and contented murmurs of “Mmmmmm,” confirming that the Brat Burger was an undeniable hit.
The Essential Topping: Frank’s Sauerkraut

But what truly elevated these Brat Burgers to another level, completing the authentic German experience, was the topping: a big, generous mound of Frank’s Sauerkraut! Frank’s Sauerkraut is renowned for its crisp texture and perfectly tangy flavor, making it the ideal accompaniment to rich, savory meats. It provides that essential bright, acidic contrast that cleanses the palate and enhances every bite. And can we talk about convenience? Check out these super convenient single-serving packs! They were an absolute lifesaver for our tailgate, making it easy for everyone to add their desired amount without any mess. I even overheard one of the frat boys playfully call them “Kraut Shots,” which gave everyone a good laugh and perfectly captured the fun, grab-and-go spirit of our party!

We grilled up almost 30 of these magnificent Brat Burgers, and they disappeared quickly! We offered a full spread of fixings, ensuring everyone could customize their burger/bratwurst masterpiece exactly how they liked it, though the kraut was certainly the star. The combination of the juicy, seasoned patty and the tangy sauerkraut on a soft bun was simply irresistible. I can confidently assure you, these Brat Burgers will be made again and again at our gatherings.

Completing the Oktoberfest Feast with German-Inspired Sides
To truly honor our Oktoberfest theme, the menu extended beyond just the main course. For dessert, I prepared a delightful Apple Kuchen (German Apple Cake). This traditional German apple cake, with its tender crumb and spiced apple filling, was the perfect sweet ending to our hearty meal, offering a taste of authentic German baking. And because some things are just too good to leave out, we also had the famous Dill Pickle Dip. While it might not have any direct connection to Oktoberfest, its irresistible savory tang and creamy texture make it a crowd-pleaser for any occasion, proving that deliciousness knows no thematic bounds! 😉

Brat Burgers: The Best of Both Worlds
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 pound Bratwurst casings removed, meat crumbled
- 1/3 cup plain bread crumbs
- 1/2 teaspoon Marjoram
- 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- For serving: 8 buns Frank’s Kraut (or your preferred brand), assorted condiments of your choosing (mustard, onions, pickles)
Instructions
-
In a large bowl, use your hands to thoroughly combine the lean ground beef, bratwurst meat (with casings removed), plain bread crumbs, marjoram, white pepper, and salt. Mix until all ingredients are evenly distributed but be careful not to overmix.
-
Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions and form them into quarter-pound patties, approximately 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from bulging during cooking.
-
Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Place the patties on the hot grill and cook for about 5-7 minutes per side, or until they reach an internal temperature of 160°F (71°C) and are cooked through. The exact cooking time will depend on the thickness of your patties and the heat of your grill.
-
Serve the grilled Brat Burgers on buns, generously topped with a mound of Frank’s Kraut and any other condiments or toppings you desire, such as mustard, grilled onions, or pickles. Enjoy immediately!
