Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies

Irresistible Peanut Butter Puppy Chow: The Ultimate Easy No-Bake Snack Mix for Peanut Butter Lovers

Do you find yourself constantly reaching for that jar of peanut butter? You’re certainly not alone! The rich, creamy, and undeniably comforting flavor of peanut butter holds a special place in the hearts of millions. It’s a nostalgic taste, a dependable ingredient, and often, the star of our favorite sweet and savory treats. From classic sandwiches to gourmet desserts, peanut butter’s versatility knows no bounds, and its unique charm can transform any snack into something extraordinary.

Here on my blog, I love to celebrate these universal culinary loves. This past fall, I decided to host a “theme” day every Tuesday on my Facebook page, letting my wonderful readers choose the “guest of honor” through social media polls. When the votes were tallied, one ingredient emerged as the clear winner: Peanut Butter! It’s a funny phenomenon, but whenever I host these themed parties, I invariably find myself craving that very item. This week was no exception. As my peanut butter craving grew, a delicious idea began to take shape, leading to the creation of this truly amazing Peanut Butter Puppy Chow recipe!

What is Puppy Chow (or Muddy Buddies)?

For those who might be new to this delightful confection, Puppy Chow (also widely known as Muddy Buddies) is a no-bake snack mix that has captivated taste buds for generations. It typically consists of crispy cereal pieces (often Chex cereal) coated in a luscious mixture of melted chocolate and peanut butter, then generously dusted with powdered sugar. The result is an incredibly addictive, sweet, and crunchy treat that is impossible to resist. It’s incredibly easy to make, requires no baking, and comes together in mere minutes, making it a go-to for impromptu gatherings, holiday parties, or simply satisfying a late-night sweet tooth.

Why This Peanut Butter Puppy Chow is a Game Changer

While the classic chocolate and peanut butter combination is undeniably fantastic, my rendition of Peanut Butter Puppy Chow elevates the experience to an entirely new level, focusing purely on that glorious peanut flavor. I’ve taken the core concept and infused it with even more peanut butter goodness, adding layers of texture and taste that will make any peanut butter enthusiast swoon. Imagine the satisfying crunch of cereal, enveloped in a rich peanut butter coating, then dusted with a blend of powdered sugar and peanut butter cookie mix for an intensely flavorful finish. It’s like your favorite peanut butter cookie met the ultimate snack mix, and they fell in love!

Customizable Deliciousness: Candy Corn or Peanut Butter M&M’s?

One of the best aspects of this Peanut Butter Puppy Chow recipe is its incredible versatility and the fun variations you can create. I explored a couple of fantastic additions that truly transform the snack, allowing you to tailor it to your preferences or the occasion:

The Sweet & Salty Harmony: With Candy Corn

For a batch of this puppy chow, I decided to incorporate candy corn, as you can see in the image above. There’s something truly magical about the combination of classic candy corn and peanut butter. It creates an unexpected harmony, a sweet, waxy chewiness that perfectly complements the nutty, salty crunch of the puppy chow. If you’ve ever enjoyed a Pay Day bar, you’ll immediately understand the delightful synergy of these flavors and textures. The candy corn adds a touch of seasonal flair, making it an ideal treat for autumn gatherings or Halloween festivities, but honestly, it’s so good you’ll want it year-round!

Double the Peanut Butter Fun: With Peanut Butter M&M’s

For another batch, I opted for a different, yet equally delicious, addition: Peanut Butter M&M’s. These little candy-coated chocolates bring an extra layer of rich, creamy peanut butter flavor, along with a satisfying pop of chocolate and a vibrant splash of color. They melt slightly into the warm peanut butter coating, creating pockets of intensified flavor and texture. If you’re a purist who believes there can never be too much peanut butter, this variation is absolutely for you. The combination of the cereal, the peanut butter coating, the additional dry roasted salted peanuts, and the M&M’s creates an irresistible medley of sweet, salty, and crunchy goodness that’s simply out of this world.

Ultimately, whether you choose to add candy corn, Peanut Butter M&M’s, both, or even explore your own mix-ins, the core experience remains incredibly satisfying. If you love peanut butter—and especially if you adore the flavor of peanut butter cookies—then this recipe is guaranteed to make you swoon. It’s not just amazing; it’s AHmazing with a capital A!

I ended up preparing both options for my kids, and they were an instant hit. The combination of crispy cereal, rich peanut butter, the festive candy corn, the chocolatey Peanut Butter M&M’s, and the added crunch of dry roasted salted peanuts creates a complex and deeply satisfying snack mix. Every bite is a delightful exploration of textures and flavors.

Tips for Making Perfect Peanut Butter Puppy Chow

Creating this delightful snack is straightforward, but a few tips can ensure your Peanut Butter Puppy Chow turns out perfectly every time:

  • Gentle Mixing: When coating the cereal with the melted peanut butter mixture and then with the powdered sugar, be gentle. Use a spatula or your hands to toss the ingredients carefully to avoid breaking the delicate cereal pieces into crumbs.
  • The Right Container: A very large mixing bowl or a sturdy, gallon-sized zip-top bag works best for coating the cereal evenly. For the powdered sugar, the zip-top bag method is particularly efficient for achieving a thorough, mess-free coating.
  • Melting Consistency: Ensure your almond bark and peanut butter mixture is completely smooth and melted before pouring it over the cereal. This allows for an even coating. If it’s too thick, microwave in short 15-second bursts, stirring in between, until it reaches a pourable consistency.
  • Cooling Time: Wait for the coated cereal to cool slightly before adding delicate ingredients like candy corn or M&M’s. This prevents them from melting and keeps their distinct shapes and textures intact.
  • Flavor Boost: Don’t skip the peanut butter cookie mix in the powdered sugar coating! It’s a secret ingredient that truly amplifies the peanut butter flavor and gives it that “peanut butter cookie” vibe.

I highly recommend you mix up a batch of this fantastic treat the very first chance you get. It’s the perfect way to treat the peanut butter lover in your life—and yes, it’s absolutely okay if that person is YOU! Indulge in this quick, easy, and incredibly satisfying snack that promises to bring a smile to anyone’s face.

Ingredients

  • 1 12.5 ounce Box of Honey Nut Chex Cereal
  • 5 squares almond bark
  • 4 Tablespoons Peanut Butter
  • 1 cup packaged Peanut Butter Cookie Mix
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1 cup candy corn optional
  • 1 cup Peanut Butter M&M’s optional, but I highly recommend them!
  • 1 cup Salted Dry Roasted Peanuts
  • Sprinkles optional

Instructions

  • Pour the Honey Nut Chex cereal into a very large bowl. Add the salted dry roasted peanuts. Gently toss to combine, then set aside.
  • In a separate small bowl, combine the powdered sugar and the packaged peanut butter cookie mix. Whisk together until well blended. Set this mixture aside.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the almond bark and peanut butter together. Microwave for 1 minute, then stir well. Continue to microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat.
  • Pour the warm peanut butter and almond bark mixture evenly over the cereal and peanuts in the large bowl. Using a rubber spatula, gently stir and fold to combine, ensuring all the cereal and peanuts are thoroughly coated without breaking the cereal into small bits.
  • Now, transfer the coated cereal mixture into a large, sturdy zip-top bag. Pour the prepared powdered sugar and cookie mix mixture over the cereal in the bag. Seal the bag securely, making sure there’s enough air for shaking, then shake vigorously until the cereal is completely coated with the sugary mixture. Alternatively, you can return it to the large bowl and gently toss until coated.
  • Spread the puppy chow onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper to cool slightly. Once it has cooled to room temperature and the coating has set, add the candy corn and/or Peanut Butter M&M’s, if using. Gently mix them in.
  • If desired, dust with sprinkles for an extra festive touch. Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for later enjoyment.
