What Makes a Reuben Burger So Special?

The Reuben Burger isn’t just a burger; it’s an experience. It takes the iconic components of the Reuben sandwich – tender corned beef, Swiss cheese, zesty sauerkraut, and a generous slather of Thousand Island dressing – and elevates them onto a grilled burger patty, nestled inside a toasted bun. This ingenious combination transforms two comfort food favorites into one irresistible dish. It’s a robust meal that delivers a powerful punch of flavor in every single bite, making it an instant crowd-pleaser and a fantastic way to impress your guests.

If you’re new to the magic of the Reuben, it’s a traditional American grilled sandwich typically featuring corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Russian or Thousand Island dressing, all piled high on rye bread. While its exact origin is debated, a popular story attributes its creation to Reuben Kulakofsky, a Lithuanian-born grocer in Omaha, Nebraska, who supposedly invented it for a poker game at the Blackstone Hotel in 1920. This proud heritage, especially from my hometown of Omaha, makes the Reuben a particularly special dish, and its deliciousness has led to variations appearing on menus worldwide. In fact, its popularity is such that March 14th is celebrated annually as “National Reuben Day.” This Reuben burger recipe pays homage to that classic, transforming its legendary flavors into an exciting and delicious burger format.

This post is proudly sponsored by Frank’s Kraut, a brand I’ve loved my entire life. My enthusiastic opinion of their delicious sauerkraut is, of course, entirely my own.

Crafting Your Perfect Reuben Burger: Tips and Tricks

It’s time to gather your loved ones, fire up the barbecue, and prepare for an unforgettable outdoor feast! Crafting these Reuben burgers is surprisingly simple, and the rave reviews from my family, filled with appreciative “mmm’s” and “yums,” speak volumes about their deliciousness.

One of my greatest joys in cooking is finding innovative ways to reinvent classic comfort foods. This Reuben burger is a prime example. While the burgers sizzled on the grill, I gently warmed the Frank’s Kraut and corned beef together. For convenience, I used high-quality deli-sliced corned beef, chopped finely. However, this recipe is also a brilliant solution for utilizing any leftover corned beef you might have from a previous meal, perhaps after a St. Patrick’s Day celebration!

For those who love to take their homemade dishes to the next level, consider making your own Homemade Thousand Island Dressing. It truly adds a fresh, vibrant flavor that complements the richness of the burger perfectly.

Frank’s Kraut: The Heart of a Perfect Reuben

My journey with this Reuben Burger began in honor of National Burger Month back in 2015 when Frank’s Kraut reached out to me. The opportunity to create a Reuben Burger featuring their exceptional product was one I enthusiastically embraced!

Frank’s Kraut first discovered my culinary passion after I shared a recipe for traditional Polish Sausage & Sauerkraut, just like my grandmother used to make. As someone with Polish heritage, I can confidently say I haven’t bought another brand of sauerkraut since. That’s a strong endorsement from someone who grew up with kraut as a staple!

Their sauerkraut products consistently deliver freshness and exceptional flavor. I particularly appreciate the convenience of their 2-pound poly bags, though Frank’s Kraut is also available in glass jars and cans. A major bonus is its impressive shelf life in the refrigerator. I often transfer any unused portion from a bag into a canning jar, knowing it will stay fresh and ready to be enjoyed as a perfect topping for our grilled hot dogs or other meals later in the week.

Ingredients for Reuben Burgers

Essential Ingredients for Your Delicious Reuben Burger

This incredible Reuben burger recipe utilizes a selection of straightforward ingredients, many of which you might already have on hand. For precise measurements, please refer to the comprehensive recipe card located further down.

For the Juicy Burgers:

  • Lean Ground Beef: Opt for a good quality lean ground beef to ensure a juicy yet not overly greasy burger. The fat content helps keep the patty moist and flavorful.
  • Thousand Island Dressing: This is a secret ingredient mixed directly into the patty, adding moisture and that signature Reuben flavor from the inside out. While store-bought works, my Homemade Thousand Island Dressing will truly elevate these burgers!
  • Onion: Finely chopped yellow onion is typically my choice, lending a subtle sweetness and aromatic depth to the beef.
  • Salt & Black Pepper: Basic seasonings are crucial to bring out the best in the beef. Adjust to your taste.

For the Classic Toppings:

  • Frank’s Sauerkraut: This is a non-negotiable for an authentic Reuben experience. Its tangy, briny crunch cuts through the richness of the beef and cheese, providing essential balance.
  • Corned Beef: I recommend purchasing high-quality deli corned beef and asking them to slice it a little thicker than usual. Then, finely chop it at home, either with a sharp knife or a food processor, for even distribution on the burger.

Ingredients for Serving - Buns and Cheese

To Serve the Perfect Burger:

  • Rye Buns: For an ultimate authentic touch, seek out rye buns. Sometimes local bakeries like HyVee can make them if given advance notice. If not available, brioche buns are a fantastic alternative, offering a soft, slightly sweet contrast.
  • Swiss Cheese: Ask your deli to cut the Swiss cheese slices a little thicker. This ensures a wonderfully melty, gooey layer of cheese that encapsulates the burger and toppings.
  • Thousand Island Dressing: Don’t forget extra dressing for drizzling over the top! It ties all the flavors together beautifully.

Lean Ground Beef for Reuben Burgers

Step 1: Prep the Patties

In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, Thousand Island dressing, chopped onion, salt, and black pepper. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to tough burgers. Form the mixture into 6 evenly sized burger patties. Cook them on a hot grill or in a medium skillet over medium-high heat until they reach your desired level of doneness. For food safety, remember that a hamburger’s internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C). A reliable meat thermometer is your best friend here. Once cooked, place a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty and cover the grill or skillet to allow the cheese to melt into a luscious, gooey layer.

Step 2: Warm the Toppings

While your burgers are cooking, prepare the warm toppings. In a small saucepan, gently heat the chopped corned beef and Frank’s Kraut together until warmed through. This allows their flavors to meld beautifully. If you prefer, you can also quickly warm this mixture in a microwave-safe bowl.

Step 3: Toast the Buns

Butter the cut sides of your rye rolls or burger buns. Toast them lightly in a separate skillet or directly on the grill grates until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. A toasted bun provides structural integrity and adds another layer of texture and flavor.

Step 4: Assemble and Serve

Now for the grand finale – assembling your Reuben masterpiece! Place the burger patty, adorned with its melted Swiss cheese, onto the bottom half of a toasted bun. Generously spoon a heap of the warm corned beef and kraut mixture on top of the patty. Finish with a luscious drizzle of additional Thousand Island dressing. Crown your creation with the top bun and serve immediately. Prepare for a symphony of flavors!

The beauty of the Reuben Burger lies in its versatility! While the classic rendition is undeniably delicious, feel free to experiment with these exciting variations to suit your taste or dietary preferences. Instead of traditional lean ground beef, consider substituting it with ground turkey or even salmon for a lighter, yet equally flavorful, burger. If you prefer a bit of heat, swap out the creamy Thousand Island Dressing for a zesty Russian Dressing, often featuring horseradish and chili pepper, to add a spicy kick. You could also try different cheeses like Havarti or Gruyere, or add thinly sliced pickles for extra tang and crunch. The Ultimate Guide to Sauerkraut
The Ultimate Guide to Sauerkraut – dive deep into its nutrition, origin, and a wealth of delicious recipes!

The Wonderful World of Sauerkraut: More Than Just a Topping

With my proud Polish and German heritage, it’s no surprise that I harbor a deep passion for kraut – or sauerkraut, as it’s more formally known. The terms are synonymous, both deriving from the German word for “cabbage herb,” and both signify a fermented cabbage delight. This humble ingredient is far more than just a topping; it’s a nutritional powerhouse, packed with probiotics that contribute to gut health, and a versatile culinary component that brings a unique tangy zest to countless dishes.

Sauerkraut’s rich history dates back thousands of years, with evidence of fermented cabbage in China before it made its way to Europe. German and Central European cultures, in particular, embraced it, developing it into the beloved staple we know today. Beyond its role in the Reuben, kraut can be incorporated into an astonishing variety of recipes, from warming soups and vibrant salads to hearty main courses and even intriguing appetizers. Its distinctive flavor profile can brighten rich meats, add depth to stews, and provide a delightful crunch to almost anything. As you can probably guess, I am a huge fan and have a treasure trove of kraut recipes to explore!
