Essential Ingredients for Your Pigs in a Blanket Holiday Wreath
Crafting this festive Pigs in a Blanket Holiday Wreath requires just a handful of easily accessible ingredients. Each component plays a vital role in creating the perfect balance of flavor and texture. - Lit’l Smokies Sausages: These mini sausages are the heart of our pigs in a blanket. While I personally opt for Beef Lit’l Smokies for their rich flavor, any brand of mini hot dogs or cocktail sausages will work wonderfully. You could even use vegetarian hot dogs for a plant-based alternative, ensuring everyone can enjoy this delicious appetizer.
- Crescent Rolls: The iconic flaky, buttery crust comes from a package of refrigerated crescent rolls. These can typically be found in the dairy or refrigerated dough section of your local grocery store. Their natural triangular shape makes them incredibly convenient for wrapping the mini sausages, contributing to the speed and ease of this recipe.
- Dorothy Lynch Dressing: This is our secret ingredient for an elevated flavor profile. We’ll be brushing a tablespoon of Dorothy Lynch Dressing directly onto the crescent dough before wrapping, infusing each bite with its signature sweet and tangy taste. An additional amount will be placed in the center of the wreath, offering a creamy, irresistible dip that perfectly complements the savory sausages.
- Egg: A single egg, mixed with a touch of water, creates our egg wash. This simple mixture is brushed over the dough before baking, giving the crescent rolls a beautiful golden sheen and helping the poppy seeds adhere. It contributes to that desirable bakery-quality finish and a more appealing appearance.
- Poppy Seeds: A light sprinkle of poppy seeds not only adds a lovely visual contrast but also provides a delicate nutty flavor and a satisfying textural crunch to the baked crescent rolls. They instantly make the wreath look more gourmet and appealing, enhancing its overall presentation.
- Rosemary Sprigs: For a touch of vibrant green and a fragrant, earthy aroma, fresh sprigs of rosemary are used as a garnish. This not only enhances the visual appeal, making the wreath truly look like a holiday decoration, but also adds a subtle herbal note that beautifully complements the savory flavors of the sausages and dough.

Crafting Your Pigs in a Blanket Christmas Wreath: A Step-by-Step Guide
Creating this impressive yet surprisingly easy appetizer is a straightforward process, achievable in just a few simple steps. Follow these instructions to bring your festive Pigs in a Blanket Christmas Wreath to life:
First, begin by preheating your oven to a moderate 350˚F (175˚C). While the oven heats, prepare your baking sheet. I often use a large pizza pan for its round shape, but any standard baking sheet will work perfectly. Line it with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup. This simple step makes a big difference in the final presentation and prevents any frustration with the baked goods sticking.

Next, carefully unroll the package of crescent dough onto your prepared surface. Using a pastry brush, gently spread 1 tablespoon of Dorothy Lynch Dressing evenly over the entire surface of the dough. This step is key for infusing the dough with that signature sweet and tangy flavor before it’s even baked. The dressing adds a subtle complexity that elevates the entire dish, creating a more dynamic taste experience.
Once brushed, take each crescent dough triangle and slice it lengthwise into three equally sized, smaller triangle pieces. This strategic cut will yield more individual “blankets” for your Lit’l Smokies, allowing for a more intricate and full-looking wreath. It also ensures a better dough-to-sausage ratio for each bite.
Now, it’s time to assemble! Place one Lit’l Smokies sausage at the wider, thicker end of each small crescent roll triangle. Carefully roll the dough around the sausage, working towards the pointed end, just as you would when forming a traditional crescent roll. Ensure the dough is snug but not overly tight. Repeat this process until all of your mini sausages and dough triangles have been used, creating a collection of perfectly wrapped pigs in a blanket.

Carefully arrange the wrapped sausages on your parchment-lined baking sheet. Position them in a circular pattern, ensuring that each crescent-wrapped sausage touches its neighbors. This is crucial for them to bake together and maintain the wreath shape. The slight expansion during baking will help them adhere, creating a cohesive and beautiful ring that won’t fall apart when transferred.
Expert Tip: To guarantee your dipping bowl fits perfectly in the center of your baked wreath, place the actual bowl you intend to use for your dip (e.g., Dorothy Lynch) on the baking sheet first. Then, arrange the wrapped sausages around it, creating a guideline for the ideal size of your wreath. Remember to remove the bowl before baking!

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water until thoroughly combined. This creates your egg wash, a simple but essential step. Using a clean pastry brush, lightly brush the tops of all the crescent-wrapped sausages with the egg wash. This will give them a gorgeous golden-brown color and a lovely shine once baked, making them even more appealing. Immediately after applying the egg wash, generously sprinkle the poppy seeds over the entire wreath. The egg wash acts as a natural adhesive, ensuring the seeds stick beautifully and evenly.

Carefully transfer the baking sheet to your preheated oven. Bake for approximately 20 to 24 minutes, or until the crescent rolls are puffed, beautifully golden brown, and cooked through. Keep a close eye on them during the last few minutes, as oven temperatures can vary and you want to prevent over-browning.

Once baked to perfection, remove the wreath from the oven. Carefully transfer the entire wreath to a large serving platter or a rustic wooden board. This makes for an impressive presentation and allows for easy access for your guests. Now, it’s time for the final touch: garnish with fresh rosemary sprigs. Place them strategically around the wreath to enhance its festive, natural look, mimicking a holiday garland.
Finally, place a small, elegant bowl in the empty center of the wreath and generously fill it with the remaining Dorothy Lynch Dressing, ready for dipping. Serve this spectacular appetizer hot to enjoy the full warmth and flakiness of the crescent rolls. Your guests will be delighted by both the presentation and the incredible flavor!
Any delicious leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. For longer storage, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. To enjoy frozen leftovers, thaw them overnight in the fridge and then reheat them gently in the oven or an air fryer until warmed through and crispy. This ensures they retain their delightful texture and flavor, making them a convenient snack even after the party is over.

Creative Substitutions and Variations
One of the joys of cooking is the freedom to experiment and personalize recipes. When it comes to making substitutions, don’t hesitate to get creative! Tailor this Pigs in a Blanket Wreath to suit your personal taste, dietary needs, or what you simply have on hand in your pantry. Making it your own is part of the fun, and often leads to discovering new favorite flavor combinations!
- Sausage Swaps: While Lit’l Smokies are classic and convenient, feel free to use any type of mini sausage or even cut up full-sized hot dogs into appropriate cocktail-sized pieces. For a different flavor profile, consider chicken or turkey sausages, which can offer a lighter alternative. And yes, as mentioned, vegetarian hot dogs are an excellent option for those following a meat-free diet, ensuring this festive appetizer can be enjoyed by everyone at your table.
- Dough Alternatives: Crescent roll dough is ideal for its flakiness and ease of use. However, if you’re feeling adventurous or simply don’t have crescent rolls, you could experiment with other pre-made doughs like puff pastry (for an even flakier, richer result), biscuit dough (just remember to roll it out thinly first), or even pizza dough. The key is to roll these alternatives thinly enough to ensure a crispy, thoroughly baked crust around each sausage, preventing any dense or undercooked sections.
- Topping Transformations: Poppy seeds add a lovely touch, but the possibilities are endless for other toppings! Sprinkle with sesame seeds for a classic deli-style flavor, or go bold with “everything but the bagel” seasoning for a burst of savory goodness that includes garlic, onion, and more. For a hint of garlic, mix a pinch of garlic powder into your egg wash. A dusting of grated Parmesan cheese before baking will also add a delightful savory crust and a touch of cheesy flavor.
- Internal Flavor Boosters: Consider adding a thin layer of cream cheese or a dab of spicy brown mustard, honey mustard, or even a touch of cream cheese before wrapping the sausage in the dough for extra flavor dimensions. A sprinkle of fresh chives or dried herbs like dill or oregano can also be incorporated into the dough or sprinkled on top with the poppy seeds for a gourmet touch and added aromatic appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Pigs in a Blanket Wreath Recipe
- Can I make this wreath in advance? Absolutely! This recipe is fantastic for make-ahead convenience, which is a lifesaver during busy holiday seasons or party preparations. You can assemble the entire wreath up to the point of brushing with the egg wash and adding the poppy seeds (step five in the recipe card). Then, simply cover the baking sheet loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When you’re ready to bake, remove it from the fridge, allow it to come closer to room temperature for about 15-20 minutes, then proceed with the egg wash, poppy seeds, and baking as instructed.
- Can I use a different type of dough? While crescent roll dough is traditionally used for its convenience and flaky texture, you can certainly experiment with other types of dough. Biscuit dough or even pizza dough can be used, but it’s crucial to roll them out thinly before cutting and wrapping. This ensures they bake up nice and crispy, avoiding a dense or chewy result. For an even flakier, more delicate crust, you could also try using phyllo dough, though this will require a bit more careful handling and brushing with butter between layers before wrapping to achieve the desired effect.
- Do you serve pigs in a blanket warm or cold? Pigs in a blanket are undeniably at their best when served warm, straight from the oven, as the crescent dough is beautifully flaky and the sausages are perfectly heated. They are also quite delicious at room temperature, making them perfect for buffet-style serving at parties where they might sit out for a short while. While some might enjoy them cold, the texture and flavor truly shine when warm. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, but for optimal enjoyment and the best guest experience, I highly recommend serving them warm.
- How do I prevent the dough from becoming soggy? To avoid soggy dough, ensure your Lit’l Smokies sausages are well-drained of any excess liquid before wrapping them in the crescent dough. Additionally, avoid overcrowding the baking sheet; allow some space between each wrapped sausage to promote even air circulation, which is key for a crispy crust. Baking at the recommended temperature (350˚F) for the specified time should yield a golden, crispy crust every time.
- What kind of baking sheet is best for this wreath? While any standard baking sheet will work, a round pizza pan is often ideal for achieving a perfectly circular wreath shape. If using a rectangular baking sheet, just make sure to form the circle as neatly as possible, and ensure the edges of the crescent rolls are touching to create a cohesive wreath.
Pro Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Pigs in a Blanket Wreath
Achieving a picture-perfect and delicious Pigs in a Blanket Wreath is easy with these helpful tips and tricks:
- Even Dough Distribution: When wrapping the Lit’l Smokies, ensure the crescent dough is wrapped as evenly as possible around each sausage. Thick, uneven patches of dough can result in undercooked, chewy sections, while thinner parts might crisp up too quickly and become brittle. Aim for a consistent thickness for uniform baking and a satisfying bite.
- Wreath Sizing Guide: As mentioned in the recipe, before you start shaping your wreath on the baking sheet, place the actual bowl you intend to use for your dipping sauce (like Dorothy Lynch!) in the center. Arrange the wrapped sausages around it. This clever trick guarantees that your beautifully baked wreath will perfectly frame your dip, making for a cohesive and attractive presentation that looks professionally done.
- Ensuring Cohesion: For the wreath to hold its shape beautifully and not fall apart when serving, it’s essential that the wrapped smokies are touching one another on the baking sheet. As they bake and expand slightly, they will gently fuse together, creating a sturdy, unified ring that’s easy to transfer and serve. If there are gaps, the wreath might break when moved.
- Precision Cutting: For perfectly uniform triangle pieces of crescent dough, a pizza cutter is your best friend. It allows for quick, clean, and straight cuts, which contributes to a more professional and appealing finished product. Evenly cut dough bakes more consistently.
- Amp Up the Flavor: Don’t limit yourself to just poppy seeds! For an extra burst of savory flavor, consider lightly dusting the pieces of crescent dough with garlic powder, onion powder, a pinch of Italian seasoning, or even a generous sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese before you roll them. These additions can transform the flavor profile and make your wreath even more irresistible and unique.
- Don’t Overbake: Keep a close eye on your wreath as it bakes. While you want a beautiful golden brown color and flaky texture, overbaking can lead to dry sausages and overly crisp, hard dough that loses its tender appeal. Aim for that perfect balance of flaky crust and juicy sausage.
- Serve Immediately for Best Texture: While leftovers are great, for the ultimate experience, serve the Pigs in a Blanket Wreath hot from the oven. The contrast between the warm, tender sausage and the flaky, golden crust is simply unparalleled.

Discovering Dorothy Lynch: More Than Just a Dressing
To truly appreciate this recipe and the unique flavor it brings, it’s worth delving into the fascinating story behind our star ingredient: Dorothy Lynch dressing. The legend begins in the 1940s with Dorothy Lynch herself, a talented cook with a flair for flavor. She first concocted this now-famous dressing while operating a bustling restaurant alongside her husband at the local Legion Club in St. Paul, Nebraska. Her homemade dressing quickly captured the hearts and palates of patrons who couldn’t get enough of its distinctive taste.
Its popularity soared to such an extent that customers would routinely bring their own empty bottles to the club, eager for Dorothy to refill them so they could savor her unique creation in their own homes. This enthusiastic grassroots demand eventually led to the commercial production of what would become an iconic Nebraskan staple, cherished by generations for its homemade quality and unforgettable flavor profile.
Dorothy Lynch Dressing & Condiment is celebrated for its distinctive sweet and spicy flavor profile, coupled with a wonderfully thick, creamy texture that coats food beautifully. It’s a common misconception that, due to its reddish-orange hue, it’s a type of French dressing. However, nothing could be further from the truth! Traditional French dressing is typically oil-based, often with a vinegary tang and varying spice levels. Dorothy Lynch, in stark contrast, is proudly tomato-based, offering a unique, robust, and undeniably homemade taste that sets it completely apart from any other dressing on the market. Its harmonious blend of sweet, tangy, and subtly spicy notes makes it incredibly versatile, extending its use far beyond just salads into a wide array of culinary applications.
Unlocking the Versatility of Dorothy Lynch Beyond Salads
While I can attest that Dorothy Lynch is absolutely delicious on a fresh salad – a way many Nebraskans, including myself, grew up loving it and continue to enjoy it – to limit its use to just salads would be a disservice to its incredible versatility. This dressing is a true culinary powerhouse that deserves a prime spot in your pantry!
Think of it as an exceptional condiment that can elevate almost anything you pair it with. It’s phenomenal for dipping crispy fries, adding a sweet and tangy zing to pizza slices that will surprise and delight you, or even transforming ordinary fried chicken into a gourmet experience. Trust me, once you try dipping your favorite comfort foods in Dorothy Lynch, you’ll discover a next-level deliciousness you never knew you needed! For those mindful of their calorie intake, Dorothy Lynch Light & Lean offers the same incredible flavor with fewer calories, so you don’t have to compromise on taste or your healthy eating goals.
But where the true magic of Dorothy Lynch really unfolds is when you begin incorporating it into your cooking as an ingredient. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of experimenting with it in countless dishes, finding that it adds a depth and unique flavor that’s hard to replicate with other ingredients. One of the most resounding successes and biggest hits has to be the Sloppy Dorothy sandwich. It’s an elevated, far superior version of the classic Sloppy Joe, boasting a richer, more complex flavor thanks to the dressing’s sweet and savory notes. Even my husband, who was notoriously against Sloppy Joes, was completely won over by the Sloppy Dorothy and came back for seconds – a true testament to its irresistible appeal!
